Collectively, me and my wife pull in north of 590k before taxes. In the greater Seattle area. 3 kids. Tuition makes the biggest impact. My wife comes from money, though. Her family lives in Mercer Island, and her father's networth dwarfs ours alone. I've never had to count money.

I’m in NYC if you and your significant other are pulling in 169K together you’re definitely comfortable :ehh:

Only a dumbass is going to actually be paying 5k in rent or something like that out here :dead:

Sounds about right. My two friends with kids living in Manhattan proper has a dual high earning physician household. Everyone else works in NYC but live in North Jersey and Westchester county, at least your money go further in those places.

Got it. But the tweet is referring to per household including the children. So $1M for a family of four would mean the household needs to earn $4 million total to live comfortably in Manhattan.

$4 mill is absolutely over kill, that makes you well on your way to being wealthy anywhere in America. that's jet setting lifestyle money, even in Manhattan.

I made $37k living in NYC right after college, I had four roommate and long ass commute to work. People survive on a lot less than $169k. I guess the point is $169k for a small family leaves you relatively poor in NYC compared to almost anywhere else in America where you are upper middle class.

After taxes and cost of living, $4 million isn’t jet setting in Manhattan. I think a better qualifier is to feel rich in Manhattan, not wealthy, you need $1 million per person.

Do you live in Manhattan? We must have different definition of rich and wealthy. I have several single friends that are high earners ($400k+) and they are all doing very well, most have saved and invested to be worth more than $2 mil in their later 30s and early 40s. I partially agree with you, I wont live in NYC for a million bucks but saying that one needs $1 mil per person in a family is definitely an exaggeration.

I don’t currently but I’ve spent extended periods in Manhattan and know people who live or have lived there. Again, $1 million per person IMO is to feel rich in Manhattan, meaning you can afford to buy (not rent) a spacious condo/co-op or townhome, send your kids to private schools, and enjoy most of the high end stuff Manhattan has to offer. $2 million will get you a 2 bd with 1600 square feet in Manhattan. That’s cool for two people, but gets cramped fast for multiple children. Private schools are $40K per child. Two high earners each earning $400K per year is $372K per year combined after all the taxes.

In the Silver Lining
This is a little bit of hyperbole. I think the magic number to live in Manhattan comfortably for a family of four is probably around $800k, which will be approximately $350k by the time you max out retirement accounts, fund 529 plans for your two kids and pay taxes. Anyone making close to a million wants to live in a place that's convenient and befitting of their effort so mortgage or rent will easily be $10k a month, so you left with $230k. a good daycare is going to run you $2500 per month, if you have two kids in daycare you are down to $170k. You're probably going to be spending $30k on utilities, groceries, food, clothing, (if you are frugal). You are down to $140k, out of that you might want to to take one or two vacations and probably want to put some extra money away in a brokerage account so you can retire early....etc. if you want to send your kids to private schools...you are down to zero.

A friend of mine tried recruiting me to NYC a few years back and I just laughed in his face, even as a single person making in the top 1% I wont feel rich in NYC.

You just wrote a Shudder horror flick.

Fuuck keep up with the Joneses, we keep up with the

Somewhere on an Xbox
I'd rather base it off of discretionary income (the amount of money that you have after bills and utilities are accounted for).

For discretionary income, I bring in about 2k a month
