No - that other poster brought up Illmatic going platinum, like it went platinum quickly or something.
I just pointed out that that was not the case. So how long it took to go gold would only matter if gold
was better than platinum.
I hear you. Just like you brought up how long it took Illmatic to go platinum to set the record straight; I brought up that it went gold during its initial cycle to set the record straight.
It's people who never heard of Nas until It Was Written dropped.
So, the impact Illmatic had could not have been that great.
Great enough to go gold :yeshrug:
bring it back to the thread topic, even "casual" fans knew of The Game when The Documentary dropped.
94 and 2005 aren't really comparable, but I don't disagree.

Man, the word classic has really been redefined over the years it seems.

I think The Documentary and The Doctor's Advocate are both solid 4.5 mic albums, and I can see making an argument for The Documentary being a classic. I would call it a personal classic for sure, but objectively saying it's a 5 mic classic? I dunno.

Both of those albums are dope as fukk and I listened to both last week actually.

It's better than the documentary to me. Both are great
It also proved to me that he was for real, and he did DA without all the help from 50 and Dre, but I can see why when talking overall impact that some people would prefer Documentary.

That's arguably the closest thing we ever got to a 3rd volume of The Chronic.

Dr. Dre really did a lot on that album, and brought in a lot of all star producers too, which he was doing for Detox as well. Lots of solid guests, and getting good writers involved.

But Doctor's Advocate was Game's first true solo album IMO.

Entire discography is bulletproof with the exception of LAX which lacked direction due to his departure from Interscope and DRE. Other than that, what are his weak albums?

Classics:
Doc (put the West back on the map)
Doctor's Advocate
Jesus Piece

Very good
1992
Doc 2.5

Solid
LAX

Tell me you not serious, my dawg...
I should maybe explain better. I don't mean it's on the same level in terms of quality and dopeness. I just mean that The Documentary feels like the last time that Dr. Dre locked in with a west coast artist and executive produced their album. And he was still working on Detox at that time, and was bringing in Just Blaze, Nottz, Hi-Tek, and Kanye West among others to contribute to Detox. And most of those guys showed up on Documentary.

So even though it's not Dre's album, and Dre's not rapping on there, there are some beats on there that were meant for Detox (like Higher and a couple others), and Dr. Dre felt like a presence on the album in a way that Dre hasn't felt like a presence on an album in along time, besides maybe Compton and Relapse.

Does that make any sense at all? I may still be way off.

I'm by no means saying that it's as good as The Chronic or 2001, or even that it has a similar sound. I just mean it feels like in terms of production that it might be the closest we came to hearing what Detox might have sounded like.

Has Dre really been involved in any other album other than The Documentary?

I feel like that's the last album that had the Dr. Dre stamp...I know he ex. produced GKMC but that album didn't seem like a Dre produced album like The Documentary
