4.5 mics for Vol 2???? GET DA FUUUUUUUUUCKKKK OUTTA HERE!!!

This about the time I stopped taking the Source seriously. It was clearly marketing.

With that said, I always thought In My Lifetime was underrated for a Sophomore albums, A Million and One Question is arguably a top 5 Jay-Z song.

The Booth is a weird place. Ya'll keep pushing this narrative that Vol. 2 was some bum album that nobody liked. In reality, that was huge album and was a huge moment period and I really didn't like "Hard Knock Life" the song at all, but this album was everywhere. It took Jay Z to superstardom. This album had album cuts that were as popular as some of the singles. I know ya'll like to go against the grain of music that actually moved units, but this was one of those cases where a quality album actually did sell. To top it all off, Vol. 2 wasn't even the best album that dropped that day. It was up against some classic albums.

I'm aware the impact and the success but I thought the album was a pop push relative to what he had been doing and it was a jarring. Don't get me wrong there were some really dope songs but it was his weakest effort up to that point in time.

My favorite Jay album, I don't think I heard until 1999, after I got Vol. 2, I heard "Sunshine", and "The City is Mine" and had to have this, even if I used my lunch money and change to buy a used copy.

Intro/A Million And One 5/5
The City is Mine 5/5
Imaginary Player 5/5
Streets Is Watching 5/5
Lucky Me 5/5
Where I'm From 5/5
You Must Love Me 5/5

I think that is his best work ever, on an album, just Jay at his essence, the hustler, before the larger than life persona, but the flossy and grimy Jay, the Versace swagger and most humane, regretful, I think it's his best work as an artist, with Reasonable Doubt second, and Vol. 2, third. I was barely 13 when I bought Vol. 2, so of course age plays into this, but to me, Jay's first three are his best. By far. The edges were sharper and the flossing was the Bad Boy era, which was always my favorite.

But 2 things

1. It's the album he said he felt he had the most fun with

2. It wasn't just his highest selling album it literally saved his career
