If Snoop and the Dogg Pound were shouting out Crips bacc in the day all these little rappers and wana Cs would be trying to claim Crips still:yeshrug:

The crazy thing is, gangbanging wasn't allowed in the videos back on Yo! MTV Raps days. There had to be a strict rule on it because no videos had gang signs, c-walking, etc until maybe WC in the "Bow Down" video. It became fully fledged in the late '90s. There has to be an underlying reason why it was more or less banned in the early '90s to it being in almost every rapper's a few years later.

Back then it was about the lifestyle blood or crip could understand a quik song(not saying crips listened to quik, dunno). shyt was like "kill the enemy". then the songs were divided on that red/blue line like fukk this specific gang. Now with drill you here fukk this specific person or set.

Idk why that was a rule back then but that rule not being enforced past a specific period has a domino effect on music and videos that can be seen today.

the first person I peeped bring that gang Sh!t on Mtv was Mc Ren. South Side crips was deep up in that video

After that it was Snoop wit the Blue flags on his window in the Gin n Juice vid and rocking Rolling 20 crip colors

I hear that my dude, but the gang affiliation was extremely subtle. Any casual rap fan would not know that most of the West Coast rappers were representing their hoods. Even watching old videos and listening to the old songs, the rappers were very clever in how they showed their affiliation to their gang. I think once Tha Row went under, A&R and managers pushed certain artists to portray the fake image of gangbanging or just straight ripped it off (Jagged Edge c-walking in one video) which made it mainstream and easier for the casual rap fan to get into.
All of these gangbanger rappers now are essentially the continuation of Suge Knight, DJ Quik, Snoop, WC, Mack 10, etc but its all fake. Only a few deserve to portray it like YG.
