MJ laid the foundation for so much of the pop music industry. Music videos, dedicated dances for songs, signature wardrobes for each album period, etc. We are so used to it now.

More importantly... there are too many entertainment options nowadays thanks to the internet, so everyone is fragmented. Nowadays, it's easier than ever to completely remove yourself from pop culture. Indy artists on Spotify you can listen to on demand, cutting cable and watching what you want on streaming services, etc. mean that no artist will ever penetrate the cultural zeitgeist anymore.

Tastes among individuals are more varied than ever. Back in the 80s, you had like 5 channels, you didn't have spotify. All you had was 5 channels on TV, and a few 8-bit video games, a movie theatre, and vinyls and/or cassettes. That's it. There weren't much options back then.
