Because not every body's immune system is built the same.

To give an extreme example, a healthy 25-year-old and an obese 60-year-old cancer survivor have different strengths of immune system. Both could be vaccinated, but one is more likely to have a breakthrough.

Even if your body knows what's coming, if it's too weak to fight it, that's an issue. You still have a better chance of wining that fight if your immune system has the necessary info, though.

mRNA technology is cool. Just injects you basically with dummy binding proteins to provoke a reaction without your body ever having to see the actual virus. They are way more effective than adenovirus vaccines just looking at the numbers.

But we got people wirh strong immune systems in their 20s getting breakthrough infections after the booster from omicron.
That doesn't explain it fully

Could Exposure to a Higher Viral Load Make You Sicker?
The short answer seems to be yes. The seriousness of symptoms from viral infections is often due directly to the amount of the virus that gets into your body. In addition, studies on two previous coronaviruses (SARS and MERS) showed people exposed to higher loads got sicker.

People with COVID-19 who continue to show a high viral load seem to have more serious symptoms. As viral loads go down, their chances of getting better go up.

These symptoms may get worse if you have an underlying condition, especially one that weakens your immune system.

City of Angels :blessed:
one of the reasons omicron is so mild is the vaccine is working

Is that true? I haven't seen the numbers to say if it is or isn't compared to how it's affecting unvaxxed.. it seemed to pass thru South Africa without a big increase in deaths/hospitalizations.

Anecdotally it seems to me more vaxxed people (myself included) are getting actual symptoms off Omicron compared to Alpha or Delta. Just from people I know, my Twitter TL, and this forum.

Off topic

may be a dumb question

Coli Doctors / Scientists

so why can’t this method cure cancer and AIDS

HIV is the GOAT virus. Our defense system (T-cells and macrophages) can't destroy it, in fact, the virus awaits for their arrival so it can be transported throughout the body for further replication.

There's more to it that involves the envelope and bodily functions but that's the gist of it.

HIV is Curry in this gif. The body is so worried about it doing damage that it still racks up numbers anyways by just being around.

One of the initial talking points of the MRNA was it was highly adaptable and they could program changes as new variants emerge. I don't understand why they haven't done this for Omicron

The Pfizer and Moderna boosters do deal with it for Omicron, but not the OG formula that we started off with.

You are right. Two people offered answers that help to explain it, and I will add that even a healthy person's immune system is susceptible to immediate stressors. If you're having a tough time at your job - or you just lost it and are scrambling to find another one - or you have family problems, or even if you just stayed up late to party one night and only got five hours of sleep, that all can weaken you enough to have a breakthrough if you are exposed to the virus, even if vaccinated.
