I wanna set up a small studio just as a hobby. I figure I'd need a beat machine, mixer, laptop, turn table, key board, maybe a few others.

What are the essentials? How much did you guys spend on your set ups? Is used the way to go?

Including the CPU I've easily spent over 3k on the setup. Used is good if everything is working. It also depends what you want to do. If you just want to make beats than you can get away with just a cpu and FL studio but if you want to add hardware You can get a real decent keyboard for $200 today. Mics can also be affordable. If you get a mid tear mic with a high quality interface then you can save money. You can also get a lower end interface and a high quality mic. It's about what you want to achieve.

I just wanna make sample based beats. I had turn tables before so I got records and I love digging so I just wanna mess around and chop stuff up and get a key board with a ton of sounds.

You could get many good quality keyboards like Yamaha's without breaking the bank for around 200. If you want to get something like a Triton the lower end runs about $500.00 and the next tear is 1k and up. If sample beats are what you are making you can always use vsts on top of the samples as many of them are based and modeled around keyboards.

1000 for a good laptop or 1300 for a boss laptop... 16gb ram. I know you said you just wanna do sample beats but youll want ya pc fast when you get into keybords and start getting good sounds

If mobility isnt inportant, a 500-700 dollar desktop should do

100 bucks gor an aka mpk mini which has keys and pads to tap ya drums out on.

Downlod a versjon of fl studio.

To start you do not need anymore than that.

If you wanna record vocals spend bout 250 on a mic and get a audio/midi interface. I use a tascam144. It allows you to record vocals and functions as a external soundcard for ya pc. Mine is old so its like 50-100 bucks but they go for 100-200 usually for a good one.

Thats all you need really my friend. Anything more than that just side dressing like good speakers and shyt

get yaself an account there, download something new that was recently uploaded so you can get ya upload ratio number up so a)you dont have to pay 20 bucks to keep ya download/upload in good standing b) you dont get kicked off for downloading too much without uploading a lot. older torrents dont have a lot of new downloaders so youll end up downloading a 10 gig vst only to be kicked off cause you got noone to upload to and you only get so much time to get ya ratio to .8 (ie. 10 gig download/atleast 8 gig upload)

EVERY vst thats out will pop on there eventually. and there are a buncha websites youll be able to goto to download other packs as well

for example, if you lookin for keyboard sounds, say you find "Ominsphere.2017 full-iso", you search that term you find on AN.org on google and youll find all the websites with the upload.

im sure others can add on

Good looks folk, I never got the hang of vst's and all the software stuff...has the beat making game changed a lot since 2008? Or is it still easy to upload it to FL and use them on there?

very easy dude. just put the files in the vst folder (they install correctly when you install already)

then you just add the vst into the fl studio pattern area

right click on there, click insert, then "more" in the new window. a new window called "select generator plugin".. will open with all ya vsts, at the bottom click "refresh" and then fast scan. all ya new vsts will then be added highlighted in red. just click the check so its permantley added

then just again, right click, insiert... ya new vsts will now be on that list. boom. done.

its the same process if your adding say filters and and eqs (non instrument vsts) into the mixer section. just make sure the mixer gets the non instrument vsts and the pattern section only the instrument vsts

as far has the game changed? na... just easier

I spend around $1700 on my Laptop. I had a Desktop PC but i needed a Laptop for my sound-design course.
Thinking about going fully software with maybe a MIDI-Keyboard and some KRK Monitors but i'm not sure if i can use the monitors since i live in an apartment with neighbours.

I still have an E-Mu MP-7 synthesizer which i think is 1 of the greatest synths for Hip-Hop. The Bass-sounds in there are incredible. I used to use the MP-7 in combination with the MV-8800 10 years ago.
I know there's a software version of the E-Mu MP-7. Think i'm gonna sell the MP-7 and just get that software version cause software saves a lot of time. And the MP-7 is a digital synth anyway so they don't make a huge difference in soundquality once it's recorded. I would still love to get an Analog Synth one day though cause that really makes a big sound difference in recordings.

So far ?

I've spent :
Fl Studio - $200 ( got two discounts and got the producer edition of FL through upgrading for roughly that much)
Midi Keyboard - $60
88 Key Yamaha Keyboard - $200 (pawnshop come up :lawd: )
Guitar - $250, was discounted because the box was opened.
Audio Interface - $25 (Pawnshop come up :lawd: )
Blue Yeti Mic - $200
Pop filter - $25

Still need :
Bass Guitar
Monitors
Stand for my 88 key
More Powerful Laptop (I'm running a cheap one right now)
Physical Drum kit
Scarlett 8i6

I save where I can so I downloaded several Free Drum packs and VST's.
I've got Synths that were totally free so that means that just about any that were available
on the net I've downloaded.
Digital Drum genre specific kits (Pop Rock, Funk, Jazz), 808's, 909's, Hip-Hop drum kits etc.
Digital Piano's (Rhodes, .sf2 files and so on)
Digital Pedals, Amps and Cabs as well.
And I use all of the stock software that came with Fl studio as well.

Depending on what you're trying to do, your set up can be really cheap and barebones
or increasingly expensive. I'm trying to entirely self produce and self release an album
as a personal goal, so as my vision for that album grows, what I need grows.

Don't Believe the Hype
You see, call me a fool for this, but I don't pirate software. I have nothing against those that do, but I'm just "bad" at it. Plus, when sh!t gets all f*cked up with my Mac (like it did in February) and I have to reinstall everything, I'm that dude on the phone with customer support.

That said, this is a rough estimate of my current setup:
  • iMac 27" 5K (late 2015): $2100
  • Logic Pro X: $200
  • Headphones: $160
  • Komplete Ultimate 8 (2012): $400
  • Upgrade to Komplete Ultimate 11 (2017): $300
  • Omnisphere 1 (2012): $800
  • Nexus 2 (2017): $250
  • Nexus 2 XP (about 10-12) (2017): $600
  • iZotope Ozone 7 (2017): $400
  • MIDI controller: $100
Total: $5,310 (approximately)
