Example in my city average rent for a one bedroom is like a grand.

Average house is over 500k, you need a down payment, and a great paying job to afford the monthly mortgage payments especially when the interest rates rises.

Is this Toronto?

I know of a few spots in DC where you can get a one bedroom for 650 to 850 and for just under a grand at 950, you could prolly upgrade to a 2 BR.

They're not near the safest neighborhoods ever but they're quiet enough and kids can play outside without too much worry. That gentrification is creeping closer and closer to em though so that might change. The police patrol more regularly now so they're getting even safer at least.

On the other side of the river, I'm checking now and there's apparently a 5br house going for 180k. I don't know too much about houses though. I guess I've been spoiled by prices like that and living on the cheap side of town.

Is it an apartment or townhome? The schools are shyt in that area which is weird because they have access to a lot of money. I live in a town home 3 br 1.5 bath and basement. I don't live alone so my expenses are shared and that makes a HUGE difference. The schools are legit and I do have some black neighbors lol

Yup Toronto.

As a single person good luck buying a house in the city unless you head to the suburbs and even then its still pricey.
