I game with headphones for a few reasons.
1. i usually play games at night, and have female sleep over a lot.
2. it's more immersive to me.
I got the SteelSeries Siberia 800. unlike most gaming head sets they don't look like toys or cheap. They have a retractable mic, and are wireless.
