How prevalent do you think "blackballing" is in Hip hop?

Exactly... DMX in 2006 was :flabbynsick: AND a liability on top of that.

So many people say Jay did this nikka and that nikka wrong when he was pres at Def Jam, but every nikka they stickin' up for were rappers whose best days were already behind them. DMX was washed, LL made a terrible album, Method Man hadn't had a hit in like 7 years... nobody mentions how Ghostface got to drop mad albums, or how Redman got to finally drop another album after years on the shelf.

And yeah blackballing exists. It's not that lame shyt where nikkas flop and blame it on a conspiracy. It's that shyt where nobody'll fukk with 'em for anything at all in risk of burning a bridge. A blackballed artist won't even get a chance to flop.

Hov didnt blackball Budden? You Jay stans got to be for real with ya selves....no tri state rapper floruished under HOV regime

prevalent as ever. You would be surprised how much cats are blackballed in the industry. You do everything in your power to not fukk up the money train. If shady didn't sign 50,he probably would've took the def jam deal and ended up on the shelf forever so he couldn't "jah rule" jah rule.

a lot of cats get black balled from not handling the politics of the game right. I've seen managers of artist storm in offices yelling at the dude behind the desk while the dude behind the desk is just looking at him like :beli: next thing you know that artists album is "coming soon" for the next 2 years. I've seen artist treat people like shyt too. They don't understand how damaging that "hard to work with" title is to their career. All these labels all talk to each other.

I don't know but I think Lupe Fiasco might be the most clear case of blackballing ever, lol. I don't know if it was the anti-Obama stuff or the anti-corporate/Jewish stuff...or a mixture of both, but bro went from being a strong strong B-list artist, you can argue he was an A-list rapper if you wanted to but I'd say B...to selling like 2000 albums and getting no support nowhere and ish like that...it's unreal almost. People forget that he was a big artist he's been blacklisted for so long.

He's got vids with 100+ million views that was everywhere, playing at sporting events and ish. Joints with Trey Songz that was killin the radio, ish was on Hot 97 all day it felt like. Grammys. Madd other accolades...

...to nothing pretty much. If he wasn't able to at least get out on the road bro might be down bad out here, which is crazy.

I remember when Lupe was running around saying he wants be indie, cause the label was tampering too much with his music (forcing him to have hits, made by Atlantics artists and producers). Then he goes indie, and he’s blackballed? :mjlol:

Most times dudes say it about themselves they’re just copping pleas for why nobody gives a fukk about their releases.

It’s a very capitalist business. If you can generate return you’re good.

The worst stories I’ve heard are about those who go on years of hiatus just running through their advances without producing any music and then say they’re blackballed when the label moved on from their wasteful asses

This is revisionist history at its finest. When Lupe was at Atlantic they put their full push behind him from day one, but he didn’t want play ball. All of those hits that B.O.B had with Bruno Mars and Hayley Williams a decade ago were initially for Lupe, but he didn’t want to do the songs. It was his prerogative to say no to the songs, but you can’t turn around and say you got blackballed when the label was trying to give you successful records. Even the hits that Lupe did have only came about because the label wanted him to make more radio friendly singles. Lupe just wanted to make rappity rap records, which is what he’s done since leaving Atlantic, and why he doesn’t sell anymore.

Lupe’s career is an example of why most rappers need a label and A&Rs to be successful.

The Coli is hilarious.

Lupe was trying to con his way out of his contract and went on a media tour bashing the label, but somehow he was blackballed :heh:
