I mean these are proper legit directors like Fincher, Niccol, Cassavetes etc. who have been giving him leads.

Even in his early unproven career, he's been apart of some enormous flops like Southlane Tales and Love Guru, and the likes of Friends with Benefits, Bad Teacher and In Time recently have done poorly. He's only been apart of one great film.

Now the Coen brothers got him as a lead for their new film?

The only thing I can think is directors see him as a box office draw, but only Social Network and Bad Teacher (Diaz+Segel helped) have grossed 100 million (both just grossed that amount).

Timberlake stuck out so bad in that film. Every other actor managed to meld themselves into the movie so well that it seemed organic. Timberlake shows up and I'm like. "wow, Timberlake is playing Timberlake".
