In the Kakashi second bell test with Naruto and Sakura, Kakashi uses the substitution Justu and ends up miles away. Even though he got attacked and left a piece of wood as he landed from the fall.

I figured that shadow clones could be made from nothing, while regular clones needed a catalyst like a log or something physical.


So when a substitution jutsu is used, they were a clone the whole time and the real body is hidden.

Shadow Clones are sentient with identical chakra to the original caster. Sub no jutsu is just a physical copy.

I think a shadow clone can perform a jutsu itself while a sub can't.
