When tf they made it 130

When goofs like the guy I'm currently arguing with were suggesting values were "normal", when it linearly follows that base BP increase with aging, thus those in "normal" values wander into the hypertension category over time because they thought they were "normal", when in reality they were at an elevated level and are just hitting hypertension because they didn't take action when the warning was there.

  • High blood pressure is now defined as readings of 130 mm Hg and higher for the systolic blood pressure measurement, or readings of 80 and higher for the diastolic measurement. That is a change from the old definition of 140/90 and higher, reflecting complications that can occur at those lower numbers.
  • In the first update to comprehensive U.S. guidelines on blood pressure detection and treatment since 2003, the category of prehypertension is eliminated.
  • While about 14 percent more people will be diagnosed with high blood pressure and counseled about lifestyle changes, there will only be a small increase in those who will be prescribed medication.
  • By lowering the definition of high blood pressure, the guidelines recommend earlier intervention to prevent further increases in blood pressure and the complications of hypertension.

Blood pressure categories in the new guideline are:

  • Normal: Less than 120/80 mm Hg;
  • Elevated: Top number (systolic) between 120-129 and bottom number (diastolic) less than 80;
  • Stage 1: Systolic between 130-139 or diastolic between 80-89;
  • Stage 2: Systolic at least 140 or diastolic at least 90 mm Hg;
  • Hypertensive crisis: Top number over 180 and/or bottom number over 120, with patients needing prompt changes in medication if there are no other indications of problems, or immediate hospitalization if there are signs of organ damage.

If someone is at 123, and BP increases at the base level with age, and 123 is already elevated, where do you think their BP will be 10-20+ years down the line?

Your line of thinking is why they updated the values. :dead: Like I said, people can take advice from from the 103/60 guy citing respected publications, or they can take advice from someone with HBP on medication, that clearly still doesn't understand how HBP works... :ld: The choice should be easy.

edit: And that's my last response. The evidence is clear, the position should be clear to anyone browsing this thread, which is all I care about.

Again with the “what ifs.” :mjlol:

I’m not even giving advice. I’m just calling you out on your weirdo thinking. You’re perfectly fine and don’t have HBP. You’re like a vegan trying to tell people how to cook a steak. :mjlol::dead:

Really not normal, my last BP reading was 104/59, at 123 you need to get to work. I hate "normal" standards in America because at that value you are only a few bad decisions from from hypertension. 120-129 is "elevated" per AHA standards, and you always want a Diastolic far below 80, 80 isn't ideal at all.

You see, they even say that 120+ is elevated and you are at risk for high blood pressure and need to take steps towards corrective action. That's why I hate when people report "normal" at 120, you aren't normal, you are elevated and probably a year away from hypertension.

And on the numbers mattering:
Subbed, great post! I take 10 MG of Amlodipine for high blood pressure

Breakdown of the data from Esselstyn:

Now with that, consider that most black people live in the south, consider that in these areas are issues with access to health care, access to quality food, and access to the proper knowledge needed to ensure healthy living. And then consider the common dishes found in these areas, anyone of aware of southern dishes knows damn well this is primarily contributing to health issues. So when we consider these variables, it would follow that black people are predominantly represented in the HBP studies, but all of these areas can be improved.

Already covered that:

PCRM a non-profit on the plant-based issue, but those are medical professionals sourcing from peer-reviewed journals.
