On your bill of sale, you MUST specifically state, "This <model year><manufacturer year><manufacturer name><car model>, <VIN>, is being sold to <buyer> "AS IS" on <date> for <price>.

Example, "This 1998 Pontiac Bonneville, ASDF12345436, is being sold to John Doe "AS IS" on 4-28-2015 for $500.

You can be up front with prospective buyers about the known problems with the car.

is the bill of sale just on the title itself?

You could just sign over the title, it has stuff on there where you fill out your info, the buyer's info, purchase price, date of sale, mileage of the car.
Check out your DMV web page and see what is needed to transfer a car. You don't want the buyer to come back to you for a bill of sale. Just give it to him anyway along with the title..

Good thread cuz I have a 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis with barely 135K miles that I'm hoping to get rid of this summer. I've had it for 5 years, and it's had super minor issues...as all 10+ year old cars do. I get the tuneup every year, change oil on the reg, etc. The engine is and always has been great, and I'm sure it can cruise another 100K miles easy.

Could I get $1K for it? :mjpls:

unless you have the maintenance records it's hard to do.
