Forgot to post my comment lol. I was gonna say that people on lower economic levels often do things to "catch up" or imitate those at higher levels; keeping up with the Jones. Embracing name brands is a great example of that. It's less a race thing than a class thing.

I like the Mad Men clip because Pete is trying to explain the American Dream to someone who it doesn't exist for. He can buy a TV but it doesn't improve his life or make him happy. So while some black people were able to buy enough things to imitate the American Dream, others couldn't...and like the guy in the clip, just ended up with a tv or something else.

We live in such a consumer-driven society, this can be applicable to anyone, just not black folks.

Also, it sounds as if they are describing a more class-based consumer behavior that can be found among all who came from humble beginnings from every racial group. The Real Housewives or My Super Sweet Sixteen franchises are good examples of this. This is prevalent among all groups.

Everybody does this but the online know it alls will say only certain classes do this and blah blah blah which is complete bullshyt. You got people who do it and those who don't period regardless of what social class they in. nikkas always looking for a reason to hate smfh
