Men lie, women lie, emails and hardcopies do not. Live by this.

Makes sure you document all of your actions, and correspondences, keep track of time used....be your own manager basically. Never give them a chance to bring you down because they will look for any excuse.

Dress the part and look according to your position. If its business attire but ppl are loose with it, dress in business attire. Dont dress down unless theres a memo released allowing it.

Keep details about your private life to a minimum. Treat your job interactions like job interviews

The thing with corporate is that there become many chefs in the kitchen, lots of people with decision making influence (if not power).

And the larger a group of people that can influence your career is, the higher the incidence rate that one of them might be a bad faith participant aka :mjpls:

Doesn't mean corporate jobs can't work, but that's the risk I think

never let someone take credit for your work/success.

own up to your failures by calling out the lessons learned.

always add value to a conversation either with a statement or a question.

basically, leverage the 48 laws in the office and mind your business

Everyday work towards being your own boss :dame:

Just have manners around the office and use your white (proper speaking) voice.

Keep the haters off your back and paper in stacked.

I can turn up and be an ass at home. That's why I get paid, to do just that!

While in the office, it's down to business & work.

Make sure You STILL HAVE A LIFE. Don't be one of those people working 60+ hours a week and dread life. And always have an exit plan.

This is literally the bread and butter of it all.

The department I work in is moreso liberal/diversity-focused, at least on the surface compared to the rest of the company so it's more beneficial for me as a Black man who can stand out. Of course I still have my challenges.

  • Even though I work in a diverse environment there are still less black men overall, and far more white/black women. Then you have to factor in the token gay black men, the docile 50-year old church-type black men, and extremely soft black men. I don't have an issue with any of those types, it's just harder for me to relate with them. The environment feels too estrogenic for me sometimes
  • Because I know how to play the game, try to be a top performer, take on more work activities/volunteer and dress up compared to others, there is pressure of automatically being looked at as the representative for all black men in my department/building even though I'm not in management (yet).
  • On that note, I would be skeptical about moving into management if given the opportunity. #Metoo is out of control and harassment has changed alot from 5 years ago when I was in Restaurant Management, especially as a Black man. Then I also have to consider the bar would be higher for me than a person of another race:francis:

What kinda corporate setting are we talking about and maybe I can answer; because in TLR some nikkas think just because they gotta little cubicle with their name on it equals: "I work in corporate settings".

Are we talking big branded corporations or just local desk jobs?

:ehh: I don't really consider local desk jobs as corporate; that's like having a desk job inside an city official's office or inside a government/human resources building.

Corporate to me is like working and having an important role when it comes to a big branded corporation's business handlings/decisions.

If you're just working a desk job filing paperwork, answering calls, on the computer etc that's not corporate IMO.

Each his own I guess.
