Why should we give Kendrick credit for that though? Increased social awareness in music is a clear response to the things that are currently happening in society.

Because it wasn't done on a mainstream level? This shyt been going on for awhile and a lot of big people had jack shyt to say about it. You could say the same about sports. Yes LeBron and the Heat did a protest a few years ago, the Clippers did the thing about Sterling...but Kaep's actions have taken things to another level and set a standard. Music wise I think TPAB did that.

Just watch Adele beat out Beyonce at the Grammys lol. smh
I got my money on David Bowie tbh. Old rocker? Never won? And he passed away? Looks your winner to me unless they forget. If he gets in the category, I mean, it's hard to see how he loses. Grammys seem to go:

1. Old boy's club musician
2. Someone who makes music like the old boy's club or who appeals to them
3. Biggest pop star AKA we don't know, fukk it you sold records.

I wouldn't give K. Dot credit for talk about social issues. TPAB isn't even really a "socially conscious" album. It was more about him being a young black nikka trying to navigate the fame. And it's not like Cole wasn't out there in Ferguson before that or that others weren't meeting those families.

Influence doesn't happen with just one album usually. D'Angelo's album was also a clear example, and came out a few months before TPAB. D'Angelo's album didn't really explode like Kendrick's did though. Critically both got very similar respect but in terms of impact I'd say TPAB was bigger on multiple levels.

Obviously jazz rap existed before TPAB but I don't see how you can deny the resurgence is due to TPAB.
I mean I don't even know if I should call it a resurgence cuz it really never left.

That sound and content has found refuge in hip hop since forever. From the early 2000's from 3 Stacks on The Love Below and Common Sense, to the later acts in the late 2000's/2010's.

Kendrick just did his take on it with a supergroup of musicians and live instrumentals. It got plenty attention and praise but the nikka didn't really bring anything back.

na..jazz and hiphop isn't new but the substyle of free jazz in hiphop is. Most common jazz samples/influence in HipHop is from hardbop and jazz-funk.
Deadass serious, 3 Stacks was doing shyt like this back in 02-03 bro. :yeshrug:

It doesn't get any "freer" than this :ld: Can almost hear this nikka saying "dis dikk ain't freeeeeeeee"

This style of production....

Coulda sworn there was a version with lyrics on this song, need one of the brehs to confirm that. But, yeah this is THAT type of music.

Let's go with Cole's album. Nowhere near as jazz/funk oriented (it does have jazzy elements) as TPAB, nor is the production as intricate and extravagant as it. No one's going to argue that.

But as far as y'all pushing TPAB to be the only mainstream album with social content relevant to the times that strayed away from what's "poppin' in the streets" sonically, y'all are overlooking Cole. Seeing as his album was "bigger" than Kendrick's...

Edit: And I don't even like Cole's stale ass music.

Yes, I did. Just because you talk about the world around you and how you fit doesn't make your album "conscious." It's not an overtly political album.
