I haven't read much on the story (don't have access to that article) but from what I understand it's a commercial and diplomatic issue. Australia had already shook hands on the deal with France and there was more and more intense collaboration between the two countries these past years, and a third ally (the US) swoops in to basically pull the deal (and billions, and strategic presence) off of France's table without as much as a heads up either from the US or Australia before the whole thing was done.

That being said, it's all business and France was probably naive to think that they could break the anglo club
