long story kinda short a girl was stealing teachers’ lunches bcuz she was hungry and had no food @ home...couldn’t afford school lunch (we bought her some)...I think her mom had to fill out paperwork or some shyt to get free lunch but we couldn’t get a hold of her

went to her house...this was a rough ass neighborhood for a child to have to grow up in...fiends and prostitutes out in the open esp. @ nite many of them parents to the same kids we were teaching (a couple of friends of mine actually lived in the neighborhood so I was familiar w/ the area before I even worked there...one dude had a cuz’n in my class) just a dire situation for these kids to have to grow up in...one time the school had a lockdown during dismissal cuz someone was shot/killed across the street...anyway I’m going off on a tangent

went to the house...me and a white teacher and the school counselor who was this old ass white lady...and I’m dressed like a square so I’m already sticking out like a sore thumb plus I have these 2 white women w/ me lol...knock on the door...no answer...knock again...no answer...finally we hear footsteps...takes a while for the door to open up...the student’s grandmother invites us in...the reason it took long for her to answer the door is there were mattresses lined up in the hallway for the kids to sleep...sad shyt

she goes to wake up the mom...hear the mom fussing...she comes thru cussing us cuz we woke her up...we tell her the reason why we came...she yells @ us for coming to her house unannounced (no one was answering the phone all the times we called)...we eventually left and nothing was accomplished...a TA would bring lunch from home for the student for the rest of the school year

this is just one story...maybe I laid it on thick by saying a teacher should “NEVER” go to a student’s home...I’m pretty sure in many instances it’s resulted in a lot of good being done...personally it’s just a chance I wouldn’t take again
This shyt broke my heart. How...why? That poor baby had no lunch?

And for the record that's overacting. I've been around plenty of gangstas and thugs ain't nobody shooting or threatening to shoot their child's educator for simply giving an effort.

People get mad when you question their parenting. A violent dude will react that way when feeling disrespected

the 2 years that I worked there coupled w/ me just getting back on my feet @ the time had me fukked up...that’s one of several stories...I was saying in another thread...I had the utmost respect for these kids...bcuz in some instances they were truly responsible for themselves @ 9-11 y/o and the fact that they could put a smile on their face and willingly come to school every day to learn even tho it seemed like everything in life was stacked against them said A LOT...but to answer your question...the mother looked/smelled like she was using and the grandmother was old...I don’t think either of them were working and the girl had 3 other siblings

I remember that episode, Dwanye literally did everything he could to help out that young man and even if it was a losing proposition he needed to challenge the father to change his world view. Even when he told that Dad to each his son about being a man, yes it was a little out of line but the dude treated him like a herb so he reacted. Also you gotta remember in the 80's and 90's it was not uncommon for teachers to go to student's homes home unannounced, especially if they were troubled kids.

“yes”...this sounds good...but sometimes you have to be a little bit smarter when actually dealing w/ ppl

That's true too. Dwayne's comment was tactless. The father didn't seem like the person who could be reasoned with, so Dwayne should've just me like..fukk it :hubie:

That lil nikka had a bright future with his intelligence and knowledge. He had ZERO family structure, and ended up just like Bubbles

Reading your prior post immediately made me think of Lean on Me, where Mr. Clark and Ms. Levias went to visit Kanisha's mama at her apartment. Sounds like it had a happier resolution than your story though.

It sounds like you really cared about this child. I don't know you but thank you for caring about her, caring about them, for taking the initiation to at least find the kids who can't fend for themselves. It's no telling the overall impact y'all made on these kids' lives, even for the short time y'all were working amongst them.

Your story makes me realize how much I took for granted as a little girl myself. It also makes me look back at a lot of my old classmates back then and see them in a completely different light. There's no telling what a lot of them were facing at home...but as a kid, I guess you make the mistake of thinking everyone has a life like yours.

a few summers ago...a girl from the first class I taught reached out to me...wrote me an email detailing the impact I had on her...I would’ve NEVER guessed it...I knew she enjoyed her time in the class cuz that was my goal (a) have fun and (b) try and learn something new...I won’t go into detail what she wrote but it damn near brought me to tears cuz I just underestimated the little things I did and the long term effect it had on her and more than likely other students as well in hindsight...she was a teacher @ the time she wrote me and is now a principal

sometimes we don’t get immediate appreciation but moments like that as cliche as it sounds make it worth it and reminds you that even tho you may not be able to reach them all even reaching one can have a major impact...I’ve been fortunate enough to run into a lot of former students and it’s always good to see the adults they’ve become and hear them speak on the positive effect you had on them...not bcuz I need my head gassed but it’s just an encouraging reminder...I appreciate your kind words as well...thanks

Dwayne Wayne was from Brooklyn if I remember right. Plus he was a little small-framed dude. He took that big city arrogance down to VA and almost got put in a coffin. Got pushed hard then a mufukka into that wall. Didn't them white boys at that football game get with him and Ron too? If I remember right that crakkka had Dwayne pressed up all against the car.

But anyway, me and dude's father woulda had a beautiful conversation and gained a wonderful understanding, being that we're both from the Mighty and Blessed South. Plenty of respect given on both sides, no need for it to get ugly.

Today his son would be calling me "Unc" and would be a productive member of society.
