Cloud gaming is like electric cars. Most people drive ICE cars now but in the not too distant future many people will switch to electric ones. Eventually electric cars will be the majority. In that field you have Tesla who laid out the groundwork when it was a niche product at large losses to scale their business. When electric cars take off Tesla will have first mover and mindshare advantages.

Microsoft is doing that scaling their business while it's a niche product so that as it takes off they're already in a position to dominate. All these other companies want to take cloud gaming in the more traditional model of you buy the individual games or they want you to only really access older titles on their cloud gaming services. The ongoing subscription based model is going to be far more lucrative.

Now you look and Netflix wants in. All these tech giants like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Nvidia circling this and indicative of something. I think Microsoft is the only one of any of them to get the business model right. Phil Spencer was a visionary when it came to this as he started pivoting the entire focus of Microsoft in gaming to this years ago.

It's becoming a reality that they all are going to have to accept. I for one have said for years now that microsoft is playing chess with the xbox now. And Phil spencer has been crucial in executing this correctly.

People laughed when phil said they didn't really see sony as there competition going forward long term. Yet as the years go on and the scene of gaming continues to change if you couldn't see it then you can probably start to see it now.

In another 3-4 years if all the companies stick to there vision, I foresee a lot more people on the "Xbox network" again.

MS has set themselves up well to benefit from this more than others *if* that's the way the industry heads in the future. It's too early to make that declaration now though.

Stan wars aside, the core of the article is the truth: there will come a day where cloud gaming will render consoles obsolete. I’m not entirely warmed up to the idea, but you have to be blind to deny it’s inevitably. Microsoft will have first mover advantage, but first mover advantage can be eroded, just ask Nintendo.

More propaganda from the miscrosoft trenches. I am big xbox fan but com'on.

Remember when microsoft backed the HD DVD..........or had that awful "Connect Camera".

Now in 2021 it's xbox game pass, a complete ripoff for fools, because you own nothing. All Microsoft is doing is capitalizing on the "sequal" era we've been stuck in for the last decade and a half. Not to mention half the games coming out are like half the game you used to get a decade ago for the same price and it's the perfect way to push microtransactions. Sure you can play the newest cal of duty, halo, gears of war, madden, ect every year for a fraction of a price but you wont actually own any of games. Most of the games are old games rebranded and sold as new.

The only future I can see with cloud/subscription gaming is developers like EA, Rockstar, Ubisoft, ect having a gaming pass for there specific company. Other then that I dont see it as being a reasonable option for any series gamers.
