I think Harvard students might be up in arms about a bill gates or mark zuckerberg coming to commencement. They represent success on an alternate route which to me is a slap in the face to anyone who just put in the time, effort and money to get their degree. You're telling the student body 'your hardwork doesn't really matter cause you could have dropped out did what (drop out getting honorary degree) did to become wildly successful' and hey maybe they deserve honorary degrees because of the work they have done for humanity, but I can definitely understand the anger and frustration a few weeks from graduating college myself.

lol what? what do you consider to be the "standard" for acheiving success?

IMO there really isnt an orthodox or unorthodox way of achieving success...

it just depends on your ideas/talents/passion and the means to push them forward... also the componsation you get in return

Didnt read the thread...

...but I would bet everything Puff has more business knowledge than the majority of professors in this country. Yeah he's in entertainment, but business is business, no matter the field.
Can you imagine a school telling Stephen Spielberg he cant do a commencement speech because he's in entertainment? :mjlol:

Dude is worth almost a billion dollars...you dont think he has some jewels to drop?

Rap mogul Diddy may want to think twice about what he says at the upcoming Howard University commencement after sparking backlash from students upset about him speaking at the ceremony.

Despite students angry at the school's decision, Howard University has no plans of etching him out of the commencement event.

Howard U.'s students are up in arms after Sean "Diddy" Combs was selected to speak at the school's graduation -- mostly because Diddy dropped out of Howard ... and many students believe he isn't a worthy role model. But Howard's not backing down -- a rep for the school tells us, commencement will go forward next month as planned ... with Diddy helming the prestigious commencement speech. The rep adds, "Howard University continues the tradition of identifying leaders whose work has clearly contributed to the advancement of their fields and the world ... We are honored to have Mr. Combs serve as our speaker." (TMZ)
According to reports, Puffy's big day will go down on Saturday, May 10.

The University will award degrees to more than 1800 students. Combs was a student at Howard University in the late 1980s. He will receive an honorary doctorate in humanities at the convocation. "In selecting the individuals who will be awarded honorary degrees, Howard University continues the tradition of identifying leaders whose work has clearly contributed to the advancement of their fields and the world," Frederick said. "We are honored to have Mr. Combs serve as our speaker. He sat in classrooms where our students sit, walked 'The Yard,' and like many students, his entrepreneurial spirit was sparked at Howard. We know he will inspire our class to work hard and to always strive for excellence." (Howard University News Room)

The issue isn't him dropping out. It is what he represents as a man. Unmarried, 6 kids (5 biological), 3 baby mommas, infamous for shady business practices (don't know how true that is), and his wealth was amassed through destructive elements. I, personally, have no gripe with Diddy but I can see how a decent student can be up-in-arms about him speaking.

Why should his personal life be of any interest ?

He's a multi-millionaire mogul who has been hugely successful for the last 20+years....I don't see how any student wouldn't be honored/inspired by a self made black man.

Not saying he doesn't have flaws but wtf have they done that's so great to warrant and dismiss him?
