RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The 11 a.m. update on Hurricane Matthew shows the storm will move farther away from the North Carolina coast.

Wednesday’s 5 a.m. update first showed the storm moving east, away from the Carolinas. That trend continued a day after models had the hurricane hitting North Carolina as a Category 2 hurricane early Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service stressed it will take at least another day for the potential impact on the United States to clarify. At the minimum, dangerous beach and boating conditions are likely on the East Coast.

At a Wednesday morning press conference, Gov. Pat McCrory expressed relief but urged North Carolinians to keep their guards up, in case the storm track changes again.

“I just hope that thing goes out to the ocean before it even hits our borders,” he said.

He also urged people not to go surfing.

“Don’t do anything foolish or stupid and start surfing at a time when we have no idea what the currents are,” he said.

The Category 3 storm is projected to strengthen to a powerful Category 4 storm as it skirts the Florida coast.

It could then weaken to a Category 2 hurricane when it reaches the Carolina.

Matthew’s winds would still be at about 100 mph as it moved along the South and North Carolina coasts.

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory said Hyde and Dare counties still considering evacuations while Ocracoke Island is being evacuated.

“There’s going to be some serious rain,” McCrory said of the beaches and inland areas.

While the latest forecast track has Matthew moving away from North Carolina, South Carolina is still preparing for the storm.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley scaled a mandatory evacuation of the state’s coast that was issued Tuesday.

Instead of a blanket mandatory evacuation for the entire South Carolina coast beginning at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Haley says Charleston and Beaufort counties are only under that evacuation

Residents in Georgetown and Horry counties are now being asked to evacuate Thursday morning.

Churches, shelters if your Island has and community centres and what's not. Prayers going out to the Yardman'dem, especially them around Bobo Hill area.
