Most artists don’t read contracts. In ANY genre.

But if you're on your shyt, you at least get legal counsel to go over your paperwork with you. I've seen mad rappers reschedule a whole meeting to get their lawyer in there with them because they didn't want to pretend to understand what the contracts meant. A lot of dudes either just grab the pen and sign without even trying to read the conditions, or they front like they understand shyt they don’t, and then they get jerked. It was always dope to see MC's hold off on signing to make sure they had a second pair of eyes on that paperwork.

I get what Con was saying though. You want to believe that your people have your best interests at heart, but that's just not the reality of the business. Dudes will stab you in the back for a damn quarter. You really can't trust that you'll always be able to rely on others being standup. No matter your history with them.

anybody see that DMX doc on HBO?

There's a scene where X goes to negotiate his contract with the label...when he walks in, the guy says "so you wanna go over it, or you wanna just ink it"

X says "lets just ink it" and his manager had to hit that :dahell:"nah, lets read it"

and even then, the dude reading the contract said lets just go over the major details

and this is 20 year vet, done been fukked over DMX...and what makes it worse he ends up depressed immediately after signing because he finds out all the money has to go to child support and lawyer fees.

i can imagine a newer artist just being excited to get in the door or being pressed to sign quick...but its wild that people keep doing this despite the decades of horror stories when it comes to record contracts.

i wonder if there's a way to simplify these deals to laymen terms and people just don't do it or think about asking for it. I absolutely understand not wanting to go through small novels of loopholes, weird terms and all that...gotta be done tho

Then he probably shouldn’t have brought this up, because now the court of public opinion is looking at Westside Gunn in a different light.
Conway also said he wanted to sort the Griselda contract out before he goes to a new label which leads me to believe he thinks he is owed some money.

nikka those contracts are not readable. kanye dropped his contract and i thought i was reading ancient roman text.
That’s why you pay the extra bucks to have a lawyer go through it. There is absolutely no excuse not to.

Just from reading between the lines it doesn’t seem like Conway understood that he was an ARTIST on Griselda and not a partner. He mentions several times how he built Griselda was there in the mud getting their rep up. Also he mentions that being signed to three labels didn’t go in his favor (Interscope, Shady, Griselda) and that he mostly signed to Shady because he A). Wanted to seek mentorship from Eminem and B). He thought that Em and the label could do for him what they did for 50 Cent as far as taking a super street MC and marketing him to the mainstream.

He also mentions having Big records with Big artists that he can’t release to clearances. Seems to me like he was alluding more to Shady and Interscope not being such a good label to get a “push” from as he expected. Said that he only spoke to Em a few times and it was all business.

I get the feeling that he thought signing to a Major would be an opportunity for more exposure and working easily with bigger artists but he basically could have stayed Independent and gotten the same results

He also mentioned that a deal with Roc Nation was on the table at the same time the Shady Records deal was and they went with Em

A lot of this is contradictory to what both Westside Gunn and Conway have said in the past. In addition, both Gunn and Conway made some smart comments about Eminem and his fans so I am sure that contributed to the relationship not being what he wanted.

Also, @TheDarceKnight said that Conway was happy because Shady was clearing samples for him.

One thing ill say about Westside Gunn and Conway is that they complain about EVERYTHING and they feel they always need to do it on a public platform. I don’t think that is always the best decision.

HipHopDX: You obviously got to work with Eminem on the single “Bang.” How much of a relationship have you developed with Em? Have you had any deep discussions with him or learned any lessons?

Conway: Absolutely. We had some talks. We kicked it a few times. I went up there to Detroit and holla’d at him. I seen him kicking it backstage at some shows and shyt. I always try to get a little lesson or jewel or gem, a tip, some advice, some encouragement.

I’m like a sponge, so I kind of already do that with everybody. But I definitely I wanted to do that with him because it’s Eminem. He’s one of the biggest artists ever — biggest-selling artist ever and one of the most dope lyricists ever. So, I’m really big on lyricism. I know he’s big on lyricism. With him and the same thing with Royce Da 5’9, I want to learn as much as I can from them boys. It’s conversations and talks. And mostly, it’s just what can I do to get better? How can I get better at this craft? And I just watch and learn from them two in particular. I fukk with them nikkas.

I’m just going by what was inferred in the interview.

Conway didn’t have much good to say about the Shady situation. He pretty much said he got no money and that the “big” artists he’d done songs with he couldn’t get cleared.
