I always use a recipe, baking is super hard and has way too many variables like you could over mix your batter, or under or over bake your cake, or have too much or too little baking soda or powder or too many eggs etc or etc. So I always use a recipeDid it take you long to get the hang of baking? It wasn't hard to make 



apply the honey evenly on both sides what you want to do is make it even wise not too heavy on one side and dry on the other. I wish I had a flatpan because the tray I used just bunched them together.
