In opinion like Rawtid hip-hop has change drastically, back in the day just about everybody had a level of consciousness even if the shyt had a sort of dance sing songy vibe (think Afrika Bambatta or even Poor Righteous Teachers), in today market its more easy to find who is doing what and who isnt doing. Thing about music is it universal in a sense that it speaks for everybody. one cat may not like Immortal Technique or Ras Kass or MF Doom, but will like someone considered mainstream. Imo cats on the underground rap scene are that much more hungrier then say they predecessor.

I am talking on a mainstream level.

Alot of mainstream artist are in fact pushed to record commerical songs. I remember Saigon stated this on The breakfast club That when The greatest story ever told came out, they want him to do a song for the clubs on the album.

no one is putting together GREAT songs. People are putting out hits, fast food quality, but no great undeniable still vibing a decade later tracks. The start of this current wave of hip-hop music was with Soulja Boy's "Superman" and I dare a DJ to play that record in their set seriously and not jokingly.

shyt is being pumped because we need new music. This gangsta, trap music is detrimental because it is no musicianship in it in most occasions. Just lazy synth lines and 808s. That stuff will be annoying in 6 months.

Chime in...

:comeon: You must not listen to alot of hip hop because there are plenty of dope albums and songs out there

I am following more local stuff in Miami right now and rocking with it. My gripe is the technical aspect of songwriting and not sheer, raw talent. The type of songs where you can play or hear a few chords then boom! you know the record. It is just bass and ratchet crap over a beat.

If you're using commercial artists to judge you've already messed up. Hip hop is fine and there are a lot of great artists and great music but commercially it's not the same feel as in the 90's or whatever.
whats different about commercial music now versus the 90s.

There were more commercial artists putting out music so there was some variety, IMO. Now the same artists put out music and after a while it all sounds the same.
To build on what you said, the music being produced was better because it was way more competitive. Now, it is the same group of artists servicing the radios so they can do whatever pretty much.

At least there were more varieties of commercial music in the 90s and they were doing their own thing.

Commercial music today is too connected with one another and sounds all the same when you listen enough times.
There was not varied commercial music in the 90s that's a myth. Not anymore varied than today.
