That's not ego, the second most intelligent creature on the planet's greatest achievement to date is using sticks to fish termites out of holes. We are special when you look at us in relation to others that we share the planet with, and the fact we've done so much in such a short time.
Evolution doesn't mean an advanced society will pop up, like you said, sea sponges have been around for 760 million years and are largely unchanged
