You feel this way because you're now "conscious" of blacks history in this country and the countless lives that were destroyed because of racism. I've actually made the exact same thread about this movie. I went and saw this movie when I was like 16 and felt nothing like I do now about it. Great movie but an extremely fukked up situation. Really was no "happy" ending

That part when martin was looking at his reflection in the window when he was the driver going to pick up that racist cracka who got them locked up in the 1st place,and he was an old man is sad.He's looking around and it's the 70's and he realizes how life on the outside has changed and he's old.That movie is sad

We watch because it's a classic. You're overthinking this because it's a dramedy and they did both beautifully, if it were just a drama then you'd have a point.
