I grew up in the 80's so this was common. my guess is that it was easier. think about it. a little baby fits nicely into a sink and moms doesn't even have to bend over to wash you.

mama was probally too "tired" to clean the tub...and you being small it was more convienient to wash you in a sink ....it was all mama can do...she did it for the love of you..
