This isn't a brag. It fukked up my whole world.
People ask where I am from at least twice a week or guess some country all the way around the world. I thought it was people just making conversation or people just having some weird deep physiological racist issue with finding a "Black" woman attractive.
I even had a group of folks tell me they were giving me the side eye when I was discussing racial issues b/c they thought I was East African.
Been hearing this type of stuff for awhile but it never really dawned on me that it wasn't completely obvious what my racial background is until this last week. I just honestly thought those people were dumb. lol
First, my girlfriend's male friend asked me if was I Indian. He's like your either "Indian or Ethiopian but you ain't from here." I'm like come on fam.
Then today I was joking with my girlfriend about 23andMe. I did my test awhile ago and I told her to guess my results:
Her:18%
Me: 18% what?
Her: Black
Me: You think I am 18% Black?
Her: Yeah
Me: If I am only 18% I ain't Black
Her: Right.
Me: You have known me for over 10 years and you don't think I'm Black?
Her: You're not mixed Ethopian?
Me: Ethopians are Black
Her: Not really. It's different. Besides I thought you were mixed.
Me: I'm Black. I have brown skin and locs.
Her:
Look other to me
I can't lie. It really has me questioning how a lot of people see me and made me realize that I should probably start making it clear I'm AA pretty early on. I never thought I had this problem. People probably give me the
and
when I say the N word.
I has me going over a lot of shyt in my head like
maybe that's why that happened.
shyt is mad weird to see yourself one way and then have others see you from another. I never even thought of a world were people wouldn't see me as "Black" or even AA.
