I get that WNBA pay is low compared to the NBA, but is $60k-$250k a year (+ benefits) to hoop even "bad"?

TYRONE GA!
I definitely think there should be a minimum of at least $100k per year. Even that is barley a livable wage in places like Manhattan. I dont know the economics of WNBA or the league. But I definitely can understand how the teams struggle to make money. I believe most WNBA teams are owned by NBA owners or billionaire owners looking to virtual signal with the equality agenda. Women sports definitely have a lane into fashion and marketing through 'sex' you are already seeing it with players like Angel Reese and Rickeya Jackson. Problem is to be a good basketball player you need to be very tall and height is not really seen as sexy in women. This is the reason the WNBA struggles.
nobody wanna see bulldaggers either :yeshrug:

Pay is only low if you aren’t being paid fairly relative to revenue you generate.

The WNBA hasn’t been making much money so the players don’t get much pay.

A lot of you dudes wouldn't accept a desk a job that pays 60k but would tell professional basketball players who have to train all year round and foot expenses that that's a pretty good deal. You couldn't even afford to live in your own in many of those metros. 150k should really be the league minimum.

Its all relative. Not sure on the profit margin for teams or the league but if they are getting fukked on the revenue sharing, then they deserve more.

But if my passion was ball and thats what i was making, then i wouldnt really complain.

I sense they arent getting paid more because there isnt more to give. There reach isnt there yet comparative to the men where tv/streaming deals are causing an great influx of money.

All speculation

this a bougie ass website

ive been fortunate enough to travel to quite a few places around the world... and one consistent theme ive seen is African American (white too) basketball players all over the place. either playing... coaching... helping run youth or older developmental leagues and programs and other stuff

are they breaking the bank? generally, hell no... but they got the opportunity to not only take care of themselves but have the exclusive experience of living and working around the world... by way of a damn game no less. thats successful in my book

life aint sweet for the bottom half of the united states. that said these wnba ladies ain't doing bad by any stretch of the imagination.

side note: that cte ball shyt is dead... basketball can take you all around the world and witnessing that first hand has been eye opening ... football too much of a dead end and a health risk for me to endorse such a risk to young ones

But then the question also goes to how much all the back end positions are making. What are the general managers, team president's, scouts all making in comparison to the players? Off a quick search it says the salaries aren't public info but it's guessed that the GM's alone are making 750K to a million. Cut the pay for those positions and give it to the players that are bringing in the income if that amount is true.

Making 60K and playing for the Liberty :mjlol: You gonna be living in a tenement building in The Bronx :mjlol:

the WNBA per the collective bargaining agreement, provides housing during the season, so when u factor in not having to pay for a place to stay, and having per diem on the road, and free food during the season at the facilities, they should easily be able to survive at the low end of the pay scale. See below:

🏠 Housing Options During the Season

Under the 2020–2027 CBA (with opt-out after 2025), players have two housing options during the regular season and playoffs:

  1. Team-provided housing (apartments or rooms arranged by the team), or
  2. A monthly housing stipend based on the average cost of a furnished one-bedroom in the team’s city .

The stipend is market-adjusted. For example:

  • New York Liberty players receive $2,583/month (rising to ~$2,647 in 2025).
  • Atlanta Dream players get $1,263/month (rising to ~$1,294 in 2025) .

Players may always opt for team-provided housing instead of the stipend.

my company makes tens of billions every year and is profitable. if I worked for a company that wasn't profitable, I wouldn't expect to be paid a top tier salary.

You are not the owner of the company your salary and the companies profits shouldn't factor into it. Anyone wants to be paid what their worth unless there are stock options or profit sharing.

Btw wnba players get a housing stipend

The WNBA provides W players with either team housing or a monthly housing stipend, with the amount varying by location. In 2025, the stipend ranges from $1,177 in Las Vegas to $2,647 in New York. The WNBA's Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) also includes other benefits like a new annual childcare stipend and progressive family planning benefits.
