It depends on what you can do with the 250k. You can't buy a home with it. You can't store it in a bank account that large amount with no trail on how it was made will be flagged. So you can spend it mostly in material things which doesn't sustain a family long term. The other guy might only have 40k, but it's 40k plus what ever his W2s are and be he can leverage for so much more
