Americana meets Trap, a commercial match made in heaven.

It was bound to happen eventually. Miley Cyrus and Yelawolf couldn't get it right

I think Post is corny beyond belief, but his extreme popularity makes sense.

Corny internet meme culture + non existent barrier of entry in modern rap + 'Murca = Post Malone

Long ass article :whoo:

But the general thesis reminds me a lot of Paul Simon. After Simon and Garfunkel, people considered him a failure, no one was checking his shyt.

Then, in the mid-80s, he hires a bunch of musicians from Africa, bands like Los Lobos, and some other people to come “work” on an album. He steals their songs they'd already been working on, and puts it out as “Graceland" with music and lyrics by Paul Simon :skip:. He eventually had to retroactively give credit to the many, many African artists on Graceland. Los Lobos eventually contacted him about owed royalties and he said “Sue me, see what happens :upsetfavre:

a label and media conglomerate protecting their investment and hedging against failure, whilst co-opting culture in an attempt to whitewash it.

those who have eyes to see have been seeing this.

So, we see that insurmountable barrier for white people overcome by Post Malone. Sure he has a black man's costume, affectations of voice, and artistry but, simply because he is white he wins. It's that simple. And this just goes to show the schizophrenia of America. Hip Hop is THE dominating genre in the world right now, and white people have embraced black culture more than ever before. It only took them decades to really catch up as a whole, and this resulted in the rest of the world to follow suit. But even if whites love their Quavos and Drakes, they are even MORE ready to embrace a white artist doing the same thing. And again, this comes as no surprise, but goes to show how far we have to go from here. SuicideBoys essentially copy paste Three Six Mafia songs and rode soley off of Spaceghostpurrp and Lil Ugly Mane's wave. Lil Ugly Mane being guilty of a "rapper voice", but he contributed to the culture in some way, and has praised hip hop and black culture endlessly, he just does a sort of MF Doom caricaturization of a gangster persona, a horrorcore trope. SuicideBoys, however, are one of the those of the new generation, my generation, and they were emo babies. Scrim might have been a down south white trash type, but they clearly went straight for the throats of hardcore kids.

I don't see much a difference between that kind of blatant trend hopping and Post. He was a metal guitarist. He was that emo kid in school. Then he started to play dress up and changed lanes in order to recieve a check. Good for him, but you gotta call things how you see them. Especially when you're IN hip hop PROFITING off of hip hop. He denigrated the genre instead. I loved watching Charlemagne grill him, personally. It was hilarious seeing him speechless after Char asked him what he's doing for black lives matter. It's not a coincidence he's silent. He's a corporate mascot. When you're on Ghost hunters, on Fallon doing Olive Garden commercials, when you're basically bud lights mascot, you're NOT going to say anything to hurt their brand. And that's what I find funny. In rock this behavior was frowned upon too.

And I find the political thing telling. During the election, much like Fantano, h3h3 was very neutral politically. This is not without reason. For every stance you take, you lose a potential profit, so being silent or ambivalent is so key to gaining a large audience. And again, I'm not telling you what to believe, and I don't think celebrities should have to disclose their beliefs, but it seems that now is the time if any to do it, and he's never going to. Because he knows what his bread and butter is right now. He knows if he remains silent, the huge swathe of trump supporters in the population won't turn on him. Their devotion to the man is near religious, and they will turn on ANY celebrity who voices their opinion. I do think a lot of celebrities lie about what they think about him, positive or negative, to cater to their fanbase, and when you're a relatively fresh new artist like Post, he's playing the long game. He knows he is blowing up, and he needs to expand his fanbase to it's farthest possible reaches right now. That means silence. It's why I respect Eminem for what he did. He really turned half of his fanbase against him. I don't like Em, but that definitely hurt his pockets a bit, but he has fukk you money so why would he care anyway? Post doesn't. He's not a long-standing artist. He's not a staple, a true timeless icon. Not yet. Maybe later when he really has been established the truth will come out.

Another thing you have to understand is that everything that we know about Post is very carefully planned. The joke video with his friends? This was marketing 101. He may have made it before his career was even a thought, but that video was important in letting the internet know that Post Malone doesn't take himself seriously. This is important. Post needs that factor in order to up his MEME appeal. It's the same thing with looking ugly as fukk and dressing ridiculously. It's all branding, and millenials and gen z need that meme factor and irony in their stars.

Now what about the guitar videos? This is the bigger thing here, and it's even more important. White people and by and large the rest of the world following their footsteps, judge talent from the standards of rock music. It's called rockism. No, not rockism like racism. Rappers have had "no talent" musically for ages now. They've been saying this from day one. Now, I'm not going to say WAYNE is the GOAT, but it takes talent to do what he does. It takes talent to come up with decent rhymes, but more importantly it takes talent to FLOW and DELIVER your lines charismatically. Cadence is so underrated and it's why whites in general struggle with hip hop. They literally can not and refuse to understand it. So their barometer for good hip hop is whiteness. Which is why Eminem is worshipped even though he lacks in so many areas. Post playing guitar gets him instant white validation. "Well, he's not like these other mumble rappers...he actually has talent!". It's another key that unlocks that barrier for white people. They no longer have to feel guilty for liking him. He has talent now. He can play guitar! Because musical talent is playing guitar.

So, to wrap things up, what do we do about it? I don't know. What I do know is this is a perpetuation of a cycle that may just be centuries years old at this point. The white man bringing the black arts to the white population. And so it goes...are we to continue to perpetuate it? Post Malone is the current manifestation. if things continue this way, he'll be regarded as a legend, just like Eminem. Maybe people will one day see through these charades. One can only hope.
