Yeah I'm young born in the late 90s but those were always called slides for me growing up.

If you go that route than flip flops are a type of sandal. With that analogy, I'd say sandals, in general, would be unto birds and the different types of sandals would be various subspecies of birds. Flips flops would be canaries and Slide would be finches. But idk that's how I see it.
