It's still very much magazines but also more now the people that dictate these albums as classics. The internet has just amplified the means to gain a wider range of opinions but it wont muddle the water. Some guys in here just get gassed. I mean obviously it needs the critical acclaim first and foremost but if the majority agrees that it's a classic... well it's a classic. Nothing really that difficult! Something like Yeezus was critically acclaimed but not a classic because of the fact that the people didn't deem it that way. I mean all these 'Ye nerds can say what they like but it just wasn't, the majority on this board will agree with this consensus.

I can agree with that. But on the other hand you got dudes who will discredit albums and their classic status because "it wasn't big to them" which is bs to me. On the other hand, I don't fukk with Get Rich or Die Tryin'..didn't like it when I was 17 and still don't like it but I won't deny it's classic status although I don't like it

Obviously no one is the same so we'll all have different opinions to what defines a classic. There's idiots in here that will deny Illmatic for Gods sake so your GRODT opinion is fine.

GRODT is a classic because it captured the gangster rap era of the early 00s perfectly, blew it to a completely different level for kids in the sub urbs and the kids in ghettos but if the music doesn't sonically connect with your ears I don't blame you. Something like Illmatic changed how rappers and producers collaborate on albums but there's heathens in here that think it's a terrible album.

For me a classic is something that changes the landscape of a genre. I'm sure you're familiar with the term, "Genre defining." That's a classic.

But going further down the rabbit hole, is Reasonable Doubt a true classic because it wasn't genre defining? I think it is but it definitely didn't do anything new or reinvent the wheel. It took on the aesthetic that Raekwon reintroduced and put Jay's spin on it. If we are going by genre defining and changing shyt then Blueprint would be that record for him.

College Dropout made a regular guy from the chi a superstar overnight without having to talk about killing some one or dealing drugs in a gangster rap era and outsold every one. He had every rapper on his dikk after College dropout. Classic.

Oh nah I think it's a classic I'm just playing devil's advocate. I'd say its a classic because its great music and Jay at his best from a skill standpoint and there isn't a bad record on it IMO. While it didn't have a huge impact on the culture at that time it's impact for Jay and for the genre and specifically that sub genre is kinda major

but at the end of the day, shyt was corny. IMO not even that the message was wrong, because it wasnt. its actually a pretty dope message thats proven to be more n more true as we move into the millenium
