It has more to do with understanding how to mentally prepare for a championship game from the moment you wake up to the minute the game ends. Even if they didn't play they still probably saw how the studs on the team prepared.

leaders arent always the best guys on the court/field....they could be really good locker room guys....guys that provide leadership and hold the team together

Obviously a role player is not gonna make a shytty or average team into a contender but there is no denying the impact that guys like Horry and Kerr and Elie or even higher level role players like Rodman and Grant or Ray Allen on a teams that were on the cusp.
