The problem with this argument is that there IS a huge difference between an intelligent Black person and a Black person that speaks as if they are ensconced in White culture. Black people of lesser intelligence levels typically do not make this distinction and assume that an evolved vocabulary and grammar = “talking white” which traps us in a box as Black people.

Using myself as an example, if you put me around the average hood nikka they would absolutely say that “I talk White” but if you put me around some White people they will think I “talk White” for about five minutes due to their stereotypical views of how we are supposed to speak but after that they usually conclude “he talks and thinks Black AF”.

I’m from the hood...I’m from the Eastside of Long Beach, CA. and don’t really see myself as much different than the average cat from the hood outside of having a strong mother who bought me a computer at an early age. I wasn’t tryna typecast hood nikkas but I’ve been around enough to know the prevailing themes, at least in my community.

I can’t speak for everyone but in my experience the ones quickest to put us in a box will be a hood nikka that ain’t been too far outside their city. They be the quickest ones to say someone is talking, dressing, or acting White and it’s because their definition of Blackness is all the lower socioeconomic shyt they are used to.

It ain’t about White skin, it’s about White culture. I knew a Black dude named Jawaan growing up and he was raised around and hung around with nothing but White people...HE TALKED JUST LIKE THEM. When he was around other Black people we would all be like...



...because you would see a big strong Black dude in front of you but when he talked he sounded straight up like an Anglo-Saxon Protestant from the valley. I always tried not to judge him cuz all the other Black people basically was like...



...but I say all that to say that “talking White” is real but people conflate “talking intelligent” with “talking White” and I believe that stems from an inferiority complex instilled in them by White supremacy. You can hear Malcolm X speak and it is so eloquent and intelligent but you clearly know he’s a Black man and that’s because his accent and tone is consistent with African-American culture.
