4 pages in and I already know I’m late to the game with this.

I haven’t read all through the thread and you probably already got some sound advice.

I will only add this.

It’s not gonna happen overnight so you just need to be patient.

But basically keep your utilization to 30% or lower (under 10% is great)

And just be patient.

I see some folks have asked for a higher increase over time. But I have never. I have 4 CCs and they all increased on their own and in the most dramatic ways.

It took me about 2 years but my limit skyrocketed. So atleast be patient for 2-3 years as you do the right thing

SOME CARDS HAVE RULES FOR GETTING INCREASES.

NAVY FED - YOU WILL NEED TO WAIT 90 DAYS OR 3 STATEMENTS BEFORE ASKING. 6 MONTHS AFTER A PRODUCT CHANGE.

MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE HOUSEHOLD INCOME AND NOT YOUR PERSONAL INCOME. ALSO DO HALF OF THE RENT FOR THE MORTGAGE SECTION IF YOU LIVE WITH A SPOUSE.

THERE ARE TONS OF VIDEOS ON EVERY CARD AND THE RULES.
Can you do this if you not married?

for the reason i stated - why spread 10k of purchases across 6 cards when i can use two and hit point/reward milestones faster? that's also more accounts sitting vulnerable to fraud/hacks/etc. to the limit piece i guess, seems more prudent to get $30k on one card vs 5k on six cards, but i realize not everyone is gonna get a straight up $30k limit

Like others said utilization, on time payment, and income will get you higher credit. Besides my unlimited amex I got a 30k limit with my chase sapphire and typically I’m around 10-20k limit with my others. My utilization is usually less than 1%.

yeah, I rarely hit 1% myself either. but it's there for when I need it. for instance, we're going to the bahamas this summer and I bought some furniture last year, so I was using it for that. but I pay it off instantly.

Regarding fraud, yeah, it does increase the attack surface, but it doesn't really matter as it's the bank's money and they're quick to correct any mishaps without much of an setback to you.. You also have access to more back up card options while you wait for your main card to get replace if compromised... There's no real downsides to having more cards, unless you're paying an annual fee.. another one of the pros of using a credit card over a debit.. my debit cards go from mailing envelopes to a drawer never to see the light of day.

One of the main reasons for so many cards is sign-up bonuses. If you know you have a big spend coming up and you can get a card with a decent bonus offer you stand to gain more... free trips, hotel stays, points transfer with points partners, cash back etc... it all depends on your spending habits and lifestyle... it also has the added side effect of increasing your overall credit limit which lowers your utilization. It's not for everyone though and you need a bit of financial discipline.. but it's a great way to pay for trips.. sometimes even allowing you a +1 without the extra spend.
