MTS is free. Only the TurkerView API and Turkernator cost. I just like Turkenator so I don't have to deal with the bloat of a browser with a bunch of addons. Turkernator is not a requirement. I'm a Linux guy and I like Election based apps to access web resources.
TurkOptin & TurkerOptin 2 are about to go the way of the dinosaur. I recommend that you get TV to lock in the current monthly price before Chris decides to raise it.
It's pretty much all on you. If I'm not bullshyttin', I can make, on average, between $65-$80/day doing surveys only. Getting started, I'd aim lower, so that you don't get frustrated. Aim for $20/day doing surveys. When you can do that consistently without much effort, move up to $25 and $5 increments ad infinitum.
Batches, on the other hand, is where the real money is at. Get those quals. Use TurkerViews QualifEye page to do all the quals you can as they appear. This opens you up to work that simply isn't available for users who don't have them or know that they exist. When you find batches that you're good at, either learn AutoHotkey/javascript or pay someone to write them for you in order to do the batch HITs faster. The most I've ever paid for a script was $20 that more than doubled my hourly rate for a batch that I liked.
This is about to be my best MTurk week ever. My goal for the month of April is $1590 ($65/weekday + $20/weekend). I should hit a little under $850 before 3AM EST Sunday. My new favorite requester is about to make me the sole worker on her HITs. She has 700 for me @ $2/HIT. I hope she drops it before the weekend. That's 1.4K alone. It's funny that I use to thumb my nose at Mturk when it first started.
P.S. Good places to hang out are the "Daily mTurk HITs Threads" section on Turkerview forums and the Slack channel Turker Nation. They post a lot of good HITS in real time.

Update: My new favorite requester dropped a megaton bomb of work this weekend with 3000 total hits ($6000 USD). As I stated that my goal for this month was $1590, I've already surpassed that as of today. I used a bit of social engineering to convince them to make the HITs qual'd only as they received junk work from some Turkers. This created a moat around the batch to lock out the more experienced Turkers who would have eaten up the batch in no time if they weren't apprehensive about doing an unrated batch.
There's about a little over 700 of them left and it seems the other qual'd workers have dropped off or slowed down. I'm going to load up on coffee and try to finish as many of them as possible working in the early AM when others are sleep.
