Well, I've done various maintenance and repairs on my cars. It saves me money. A lot, I learn from car forums on how to do things or diagnose problems. I haven't taken out an engine or transmission though. I've repaired and replaced parts related to exhaust, brakes (drum and rotor type), radiator, alternator, EGR valve, intake, car audio, interior, fuel pump, and engine ignition.
I found that most mechanics are high school graduates and if they can learn how to fix cars, I, with a college degree, can do so too. I found that most things on a car require just unbolting and bolting parts again. The hard part is usually the removal of stuck/rusted bolts and nuts or hard to access electrical plugs and bolts.
