here it is from angles n shyt
op-1.jpg

first and foremost, it is an outboard synthesizer with 8 different synth engines. 9 if you include the drum synth.

it has like 5 different non traditional sequencers you can work with. it has a (simulated) 4 track tape deck and an album recorder which records a live performance.

its also a sampler that samples from line in, built in fm radio, internal audio, or built in mic

ive never seen a piece of gear like this

anyway here is the first thing i managed to crank out in my learning process. ive had it for 2 days, thus the title

the very beginning is a rufus & chaka khan sample ("quandary") modified thru one of these weird ass filters this thing has. i sampled it from my phone with the line in
the drums are from fast peg by ll cool j, except the hi hats which are stock sounds
the hi pitch synth in the hook is something i designed directly on the op-1
so is the bass line

1. That is a dope sample flip and beat, props

2. I have wanted an op-1 for a while but just couldn't bring myself to pay the asking price. The specs/synth engines/reviews have been super tempting. Can't say this thread is helping hahaha

3. You seen the op-z just announced last week? I can't figure out of this will be really cool, or really dumb

4. The Pocket Operators that Teenage Engineering make are cool, they announced three new ones last week. I'm gonna get the Office one.

the price is why i waited so long, also why i almost didnt buy it. my only regret now is waiting so long because its about to be hard to find them new

yea i saw the op-z. i dont see any use for it myself but i imagine its another sleeping giant

this thing is crazy. its like somebody just handing you a toolbox with everything in it, and some wood and saying go

you decide what to make and how you approach it. im about to be a beast with it

After messing with it for 10 minutes

1. I can see that there is a learning curve but not as bad as I was worrying about.

2. Haven't messed with it via-MIDI yet. Hoping it just plays nice via-usb midi and that's it.

3. The drum synth is amazing. What they call an organ seems like a weird take on an fm synth which I love. Even on its stupid little speaker, the synths had a nice character to them.

4. I hate doing any kind of non-sync'd recording (except sampling and field recording) and I've heard that's a major component of this device. So that should be a new world for me.

5. Haven't even got to the filters yet so that should be great. I've been on a big analog filter kick for the last few months (wound up getting 3 of them, haha), so I'm excited to have some weird digi filters to use with my setup.

sync like quantize? i was a little lost without quantizing too but i found out you can use the finger sequencer. theres a grid you can draw and you can create a sequence for every key on the key board.
you can hold the record button, and it will just sit and listen. hit and hold the key with your sequence on it, voila. quantized...
check it out
