She classed him up because mainstream looked at him like a thug. Yes, he was super successful and had money, but was a literal former drug dealer who rapped about it

She’s still the current “queen of music” and is going down as a legend. She was going to win regardless, but she tied her legacy to hiphop, which is “street”.
She would’ve been like a black Celine Dion or something if she hadn’t gotten with him and used hiphop elements in her music.
But again- not judging the choices made- she just made a choice to be tied to hiphop, so she doesn’t get to have the complete “ethereal, other-worldly, untouchable, almost un-relatable” appeal. Like, she has it because she’s an obvious icon, but because of what rap is and represents, she brought her image down a level.
When you think of Diana Ross you also think of Dihanne Carroll, Phylicia Rashad, etc. women like that. Kind of “above it all”.
That being said- still the queen, and I’m still paying whatever for those damn tickets
