Try it anyways man. Me and my boy both did this over the weekend and they didn't even bother to check that out either. This was at two different best buys as well. I started to ask, but didn't wanna jinx myself and have it crap out on the spot. Mine hadn't died yet, but the fans did whirr pretty loudly real quick upon cutting it on, so I didn't wanna take any chances with keeping it.

fellas, I said fukk it and went to radio shack and copped some thermal compound. disassembled the OG PS3, and I'm just waiting for the motherboard to cool down so I can put new thermal paste on the chips and reassemble it. hopefully it will be functional again. I might be mixed about trading it in after all that cuz this PS3 is fully backwards compatible and plays PS1, 2 and 3 games........but then again, I dont need 3 PS3's in the house either. and this one don't have wifi in it 
so I can't even move it into my bedroom.

Just traded my old 360 and dinner games for like 130. I'm contemplating testing in one of my old ps3 systems.
It's store credit, but I was able to buy Amazon gift cards with no problems at all.....
BTW, the 360 i copped off CL last night for $10 was in absolutely disgusting condition. It was kept in a house with smokers who didn't clean it AT ALL...it had nasty buildup EVERYWHERE. I had to use hand sanitizer after touching it was so nasty... On top of that, the tray tab (that says XBOX360 on it) was missing.
