Don't rewrite history. Clay Davis and them were running game on Stringer from day one. He wasn't about to become shyt which was why he wanted to hit Clay Davis. As unsophisticated as Avon might have seem he was right about everything he said.

The thing that's great about the Stringer Bell character is that your opinion of him changes if you rewatch the show. The second time going through the show it's easy to realize that Stringer wasn't all that smart. He made a lot of stupid moves throughout the show.
