I know how radio works too and know DJ's, honestly it varies, in the biggest stations usually it is pre planned on the prime time shows but there are also individual DJ shows or radio personality shows where the playlist can be more personalised by the DJ. I have got music played for artists on big national radio and other stations and it was through getting the personality to hear the music and them liking it, through personal connection or interaction or a professional submission which is then where whoever decided what they want to play. There's also a difference to adding something to a regular playlist and giving something a shot. It's so broad and long to explain in 1 quick post, but it varies. Sometimes people's fans make a DJ with control check an artist, if they keep hearing the same name over and over again or from a source they trust, or if they like a song that fits their guidelines that was from a plugging company or a manager with some credibility or pull. I don't doubt at all the authenticity of this, not everything is payola, I know this because I have personally never payed somebody to play an artist I've got on the radio, but there are companies that can plug to try and get regular rotation at many of the stations. Jay Z used to pay people to play his shyt I believe though, I think he would insist on paying people for things too, I think Jay was really paid before music. For artists I'd recommend making connections and networking regularly and being highly professional, cordial and reliable. Personality really goes a long way, a friend of mine is currently getting radio play all over the world and their great personality is definitely a part of it, another friend is getting bigger all the time and now has a say in shyt and influence. It's much better when you're genuine though, I can't play no bullshyt ass kissing games, I just have to be genuine and upfront, thankfully some do respond to that, some as we all know though want to be bribed and ass kissed, some play the game and do that and feel it's for the greater good, personally it's not something I'd want to do, I'd rather create our own avenues and also build with people that are genuine about the music or building. Always a good idea to hit the clubs personally or your team do it, if that's the type of music the artist makes. A friend of mine said recently networking is 1 of the most important and necessary factors in the buisness and I agree in a sense and see what he meant. Dumb dudes fukk up their networking cause they can't act properly with integrity, smart dudes network and keep it real and regular. Good to build, but if you prevent your own building your trapping yourself and limiting your opportunities and as a striving artist every genuine opportunity to build should be utilised if possible, grind got to be hard and heavy.
