Remember that the old testament was written in old hebrew so when we do our best to translate it to our language, some words and meanings become obscured. In the old hebrew, I know scriptures like that could have many different meanings like "I have talked with God as you would a friend face to face". And also take into account that many times throughout the old testament, God communicated with man disguised as an human being as well.

Alot of us get slipped up because we take to the scriptures too literally and its not our fault. They have just been translated millions of times so the more new editions come out, the further we get from the original text and meaning.

Yes,
IMHO, the bible is merely a tool. An incomplete one at that - I would like to read the 12+ missing books.
I also would like to see the churches in the black community be reveamped. In a major way.

so the only way to truly understand is to speak various languages that either don't exist or have less than a million speakers? :patrice:

Both are King James Version

GENESIS 32:30
- and Jacob named the place peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved

JOHN 1:18- no man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten son, which is in the bosom of the father, he hath declared him

Genesis 32 is the story of Jacob wrestling with an angel and the angel trashes his hip permanently with one touch. The verse is in context to the story it belongs in.
When Jacob says "I have seen God face to face", he didn't mean literally, but he meant that figurativeely because God sent an angel to him. He had an encounter with the supernatural. In verse 28, the angel talks back to Jacob saying "“Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome." This supernatural encounter was his face to face meeting, knowing that God sent that angel to give Jacob a message. He never saw God with his eyes.

my problem with religion is people who won't just admit that it's complicated

the correct response to my question was "yes"

I don't believe you have to speak different languages though so I wouldn't agree to your post. If thats the conclusion you've come to then, thats fine. I don't think what I believe is complicated .(I don't use the word religion often).

Simply to explain.

The first verse is in reference to Jacob wrestling with an Angel and actually surviving the encounter. Read throughout the Old Testament and you'll see repeated encounters where people were scared to death when they saw an Angel as they were "anointed" with God's glory and as his representative.. Could kill them if they were deemed offensive in their presence. Refer to Moses encounter regarding the Ten Commandments or his encounter with the burning bush.

The second verse refers to God, on the highest plane of heaven, where he does not move from his throne. The Angels work as his extensions since they have "his" glory on them. No human being has physically crossed that plane as to see "his" face. I'm not christian by the way, just an ardent studier.

I simplified things for myself a long time ago (because I was very, very angry at God & questioned everything - No one asked to be here but no one wants to die I thought. Then I shook off every religious doctrine I was taught and made my relationship with God my own - my own walk, my own experience.)
1. My prayer - God you created me and know my purpose, alpha and omega. Show me how you want me to serve you.
2. It's an ongoing battle to get the flesh on 1 accord with the soul, however, we inherently know right from wrong and that should be your guide.
