Personally the barbershop is an experience. A meeting place where strangers can discuss random topics especially if football/basketball game is on. Plus personally a haircut is kind of therapeutic and relaxing to me, the barbershop I go to got a chick that gives a free hair wash with a cut. I dont mind paying 15 bucks every 2 weeks.

See...now when I had a female barber back when I was stationed in DC I didn't mind paying.
I got a massage, hot towel, haircut and got to flirt with the sexy latina barber.
Hell, I'd have paid another 40 for a lapdance but...
