Everyone here in St. Louis knew McGwire was on something. I was young back then but I read the paper a fukking lot, and I remember an article about a reporter seeing a needle in his locker. And knowing he was on Andro. But ... at the time, Andro was legal. You could get it over the counter.
That's the worst part in baseball villainization of Sosa, McGwire, Clemens, Bonds, etc. .... this shyt wasn't even illegal. Yet baseball writers act all high and mighty and only give those guys like 25% of the vote needed to get into the HOF.
There was no testing or penalties in place for years. They are literally mad at guys for taking advantage of a piss poor system rather than the piss poor system itself and those responsible for it. What makes it even more absurd is that you got guys who did greenies, scuffed and spitballed, corked bats, and committed numerous morals clause violations in the hall and still being celebrated to this day.
