I thought Denzel said before that he wanted to do a comedy, but he could never find the right role. I remember hearing about the original Tower Heist. It was supposed to be darker than it was and rated R. Hollywood probably wanted to add the white characters to make it more mainstream and sellable. Funny thing is the movie with that original cast probably would have did better in theaters.

Fun fact, peter dinklage(little guy from game of thrones) was in the original british version of death at a funeral and he played the same role I believe.

He's made some minor attempts earlier in his career, but never had a hit that wasnt action or drama. Dude could easily play the straight man or the joker (of course it'd be more subdued than others, but you know), and considering how far he is into his career without any huge missteps, he won't be typecast.
