As much as I like Common if he never started rapping hip hop would be the same. I tried to come up with names that had impact and influence

Common had plenty of influence, he's just not one of the cool names people throw out in general discussions.

If you ask any of the newer more lyrical rappers, I guarantee he's somewhere in their top 5-15.

Not to mention all the 25 - 45 year old Tribe, De La, Madlib, Dilla, Slum, Mos, Kweli, Kanye, Lupe .... native tongue/soulquarians era hip hop fans.

Common has an all time classic record: I used to love HER

Won a battle against one of the greatest emcees in hip hop history: Ice Cube (The bytch in You)

Has arguably 3 classic albums: Resurrection, LWFC, and Be

And parlayed his music career into a successful movie career.

Common's run was very impactful and influential.

I agree on a lot of your points. If I had 20 options he'd be on there but I still don't think he's top ten anyway. He's had a weird career. You could make a case for him being both over and underrated

So you mean to take personal bias top 10 out of it and only by that criteria? @BmoreGorilla :jbhmm:

Cause nikkas not being objective in here at all

If we're factoring in MC/skills quality, catalog quality, longevity, impact & influence, sales, etc. then a reasonable top 10 should look something like:

Nas
Pac
Hov
B.I.G.
Ice Cube
Rakim
Snoop
Ghostface
Scarface
Prodigy

That's for the solo artists. Like a few dudes already said, this is far from my personal top 10. :manny:

I still feel that excluding nikkas that were in a group/duo is ultimately robbing them of a top 10 spot they deserve. Their impact on the game is probably too significant to put left out just cuz of their solo catalog

Edit: removed Kanye for P. I just couldnt do it :francis:

I'm not even a fan of some of those names. But I'm trying to be as objective as possible. When you combine all factors can you really think of a better group of solo MCs?

yeah i mean my Subjective list is def not true
it would have Pac, Kast, Nas, Ye, Lupe, Kendrick, Mos, Game, Joey and 50

but if we're being Objective i think these dudes are deserving

Pac. Black Thought, Andre, Redman, Common, Talib, Nas, Jay, Rakim, G Rap, Chuck D, Cube, KRS, Scarface, Ghostface, MF DOOM and some others that im forgetting

the only thing that makes some of these not mentioned is cause they aren't that popular or mainstream

To me, he'll always be underrated considering all that he's accomplished in his 25 years in the game.

There's only 8 rappers from before or during the time that Common came into the game, that have been nearly as consistent (LL, KRS, E-40, Too Short, Ice Cube, Scarface, Redman, and Fat Joe), and his career has ended up being greater than or on par with all of them except Cube.

Every rapper the Coli loves from Pac, to Snoop, to Big, to Nas, to Jay came out after Common, and he's still out here making quality projects and being one of the biggest stars in the culture today.

That's saying a lot.

That's probably going to end up being the consensus top 10.

Exactly breh. I thought we could come up with an objective top ten. I explained it in the OP than dudes started naming K Rino and B Real

List is def missing a few names, even though Prodigy, Dre and Black Thought are in groups their impact and skill is undeniable.

Common and West should be on there as options too.
They get their due tho. When we discuss the best groups they get named. We gotta draw the line at some point and adding rappers from groups makes the debate that much harder
