U weren't even old enough in 96. Lol. I think that's probably when u were born. Nas and Pac was the biggest rappers that year.
I picked the guys I picked as the only true kings of the city because they had stretches/multi year reigns of the highest level of hip hop stardom, influence, moguldom, having pull in the city from the streets to political level, checking off all the boxes/demographics.

Nas could be the king some years but I don’t see it as a year to year basis thing.

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
How Mase held it down when he was never the biggest rapper on his label? He was third bending puff and big

Big was the king from RTD to his death.
nikka Mase wrote everything Puff did. Them nikkas was a duo basically. Puff rode the fukk outta Mase's coat tails. Bad Boy wouldn't have been what it was after Biggie died if it wasn't for Mase. Biggest singles on Puff Daddy and the family outside of "I'll Be Missing You" was with Mase.

Yeah Harlem world was the third most successful bad boy album of 1997.

Its literally a year to year basis thing because that's how shyt went back then. Time didn't work the way it does now. shyt was slower.

Nas never wanted it. Jay campaigned for it. He took it when he beat Jay. X naturally had it before Jay. Nas had it in 96 too. Biggie had 94-95 imo. Mase had 97 overall. Jay had 00-01. Nas had 02.

Nas wanted it in 01-02 thats for sure.

“King of the town? Yeah, I been that
You know I click-clack — where you and your mens at?

He wanted it in 96 as well

You way too stuck on numbers. Victory and All About The Benjamins were way bigger than the Mase singles. People associate those tracks way more with the Puff album than the Mase singles and it wasn't just because Big died. Mase wasn't looked at as THAT nikka just another cog in the Bad Boy machine. Behind the scenes he was definitely doing a lot of the leg work but so was Jada but that has shyt to do with the conversation. Mase was looked at as a Nelly type. He could flow his ass off but wasn't taken seriously as a top rapper which the KONY was usually associated with. Not just popular but the nicest too. That's where DMX came up short in a lot of convos.

Like I said. In 02 Nas had it. And in 96 Nas had it. There's no argument imo. Cam is the only argument for 02.

I'd say 50, Jay and Biggie definitively.

For some reason I don't think Nas or DMX ever had KONY status.

DMX never wanted to be king and was too unruly anyway. He was more of a renegade and was in his own world

Nas was overshadowed in his prime by all the drama of the east coast west coast beef and Jay ended up being the reigning king.
Even though Ether was deadly he didn't capitalize on it with a project strong enough to dethrone Jay after he dropped Blueprint.

LL was and is a pioneer which is not the same as a king.
